Touch is the bridge that connects the mind to the body in Theresa Senato Edwards' debut collection of poetry Voices Through Skin, a text that addresses the disease of contemporary culture’s social and emotional fragmentation, on the familial and national levels, and its effects on our bodies’ functioning as individuals, couples, families, and communities. Theresa Senato Edwards' poetry collection, Voices Through Skin, is a study of imperfection and difficulty. Each poem illustrates the way suffering makes us human, makes us less than perfect. The scars that appear from this struggle, earned at great cost, anchor us to the world. The poems Edwards has included in this book are gritty and often overwhelming. Sometimes the words, painful and wounding, tip over into beauty and sometimes they edge the reader more quietly into mere recognition, into witness. In either case, the pivotal truth of Voices Through Skin is that nothing endured is wasted. Rather, it is the very imperfection of our existence that makes what we've suffered worthy of remembrance so that our voices rise up from within to speak through the skin, quietly perhaps, but all the more precious for that.
